Volleyball Offense: Learning Passing Footwork

For a volleyball team’s offense to work, it needs to have strong passing. That all starts with having the proper footwork.

Passing is the foundation for a team to successfully run an offense with multiple hitters, and your footwork is one of the most important elements. It can also be one of the most difficult aspects of the game to master, so make sure you practice regularly.

  • Start balanced on the balls of your feet.
  • Read which direction the ball is moving. This will dictate your first step and the direction the ball will travel.
  • Keep your movements as simple and fluid as possible. You want to beat the ball to the spot with both feet and maintain your balance when the ball arrives.

An effective way to stay simple, balanced and fast is by executing a step-hop. In this movement, ou will take one step and then hop or shuffle with both feet in the direction of the ball. This should be a fluid, controlled motion. You should be able to make quick adjustments on balls to your left, right, front or back. By starting balanced, you’re able to make these adjustments easily in all directions.

Good passing footwork will allow you to increase efficiency, which can ultimately lead to more scoring opportunities for your team.

In addition to footwork, a strong pass will need a solid platform. A solid passing platform can give you more surface area to create angles and direct the ball to teammates.
