Baseball Fielding Drills: The Infield Shuffle Drill

Learn to improve your footwork and fielding skills by practicing side-to-side movements that can help you scoop up ground balls this season.

You don’t need an infield to practice your infield defensive skills. There’s plenty of work that can be done for fielders practicing indoors this offseason. Champion Youth Baseball Coach Branndon Pezzelle suggests the Infield Shuffle Drill. Designed to help build side-to-side movement as well as fine tune your fielding, the Infield Shuffle Drill can be a great addition to your next practice

To set up this drill, you will need a teammate and two cones placed 6 to 8 feet apart from one another. Bend your knees and get into an athletic stance with your hands out in front, ready to receive a ground ball. As you shuffle from cone to cone, your teammate will roll you a ground ball that you will catch and return before moving back to the other cone.

“You can use this with a glove or with your bare hand, whichever works best for you,” Pezzelle says. “You want to get about 20 good repetitions back-and-forth between the infielder and whoever is tossing the balls. The more often we do this and the faster we can do this, the better we can be as infielders and the better our team will be overall.”

Push yourself during practice this year as you prep for those dog days on the diamond. Use these Pro Tips to help sharpen your fielding skills so you’ll be ready to dominate the season.
