Football Kicking: No Step Field Goal Drill

Working through this drill can help improve the positioning of your body, knee and foot during field goal attempts.

Success as a football kicker can come down to repetition. Kickers need to be able to put their bodies in the same position kick after kick to help their team add three points to the scoreboard.

The No Step Field Goal Drill can help you improve the positioning of your body, knee and foot. This is a fundamental drill kickers can use to perfect their contact as well as warm up before a game.

NO STEP FIELD GOAL DRILL

To start the drill, you’ll need a teammate to hold the ball or use a ball holder. You’ll stand close to the ball as if you’re about to make contact for a field goal attempt.

This drill focuses, in particular, on three areas that can affect the kick: the body, knee and foot.

  • Your body should be as tall as possible and upright when striking the football.
  • Keep the knee of your kicking leg locked out when striking the ball.
  • Your kicking foot should have the toes extended. You should also extend your kicking leg away from your body at a 2 o’clock angle. Think of standing in the center of a clock and having your leg pointing toward where 2 o’clock would be.

Your plant foot should remain stationary throughout the drill. Once you have your body in the correct position, you’ll then focus on the act of kicking the ball.

“When we take our backswing, [you] want to make sure [you] do the best [you] can to get [your] shin at a parallel angle to the ground,” Division I football coach Chris Merritt says.

You’ll then bring your kicking leg down and strike the ball. You should focus on using the top of the instep of your shoe to make contact with the bottom of the ball.

“[You] will take [your] swing through the football, striking the bottom third of the football up through the top third,” Merritt says.

By having your body in the right position, you can improve your chances of sending the football through the uprights.
