Football Kicking: Punting Step Drill

Mastering your steps before a punt can help you add consistency to your game and win the special teams battle.

A well-placed punt can pin your opponent deep and help keep points off the scoreboard. To make the most of these opportunities, it’s crucial you take the right steps before the punt.

Division I football coach Chris Merritt has a quick drill to help you work on your step consistency. The Punting Step Drill can help you develop the muscle memory needed for successful boots downfield. By taking the same steps with each punt, you can start to become a consistent force on special teams.

“The focus of this drill is to maintain the consistency and muscle memory to improve our efficiency each and every time we kick the ball,” Merritt says.

THE PUNTING STEP DRILL

You’ll set up the drill by first marking your starting point. To do so, take two pieces of tape and place them on the ground, with one piece in front of each foot. Your kicking foot will be slightly behind your plant foot. Be sure to keep your tape handy, as you’ll need two more pieces later in the drill.

To run through the drill:

  • Take a yard-long step with your kicking foot. When you plant your foot, mark the spot with a piece of tape.
  • Once you’ve marked a spot for your kicking leg, take a step with your plant leg. This step should be a little longer and about a yard and a half in length. Mark this spot with a piece of tape.

“What we’ve done is we marked, in a straight line, a beginning point and an end point,” Merritt says.

Take some repetitions and run through your pre-punt steps. Aim to step where you have marked to help increase the consistency of your punts.
